Bassist Walter Page’s influence on drummer Jo Jones and other musicians – guitarist Freddie Green, for example, was that of a teacher who was deeply knowledgeable of music theory and who had nearly two decades of experience as a professional musician in 1936. "No, it don't go like that," Page would tell Green when he started playing with Basie as a young guitarist in 1937. Jones claims that Green had to change his playing, and Jones also had to learn because, "I didn’t know how to play a major or minor. I knew music. I was very adept in music but I didn't know, see. Walter Page was the father of us all."
