A couple of months later [in 1954] Mona and Tony showed up at Gartnerveien [the author's home] along with some other Norwegian musicians and ten members of the Basie band. The Count Basie Orchestra had played a concert at the Folketeatret [in Oslo], and the jam session included, among others, trumpet player Joe Newman, baritone saxophonist Charles Fowlkes, trombonists Benny Powell and Bill Hughes, drummer Gus Johnson, sax player Ernie Wilkins, trumpeter Wendell Cully, bassist Eddie Jones, as well as the legendary guitarist Freddie Green. Green humbly seated himself in a corner of the entry way, and from here we could enjoy his famous guitar accompaniment close up. No other rhythm guitarist in the world ever had so much personality, and nobody has been able to replace him.
