Transcription: Basie's BagTitle: Basie's Bag (head and two choruses backing the Harry "Sweets" Edison solo)e Basie's Bag here is not to be confused with George Benson's composition with the same title on his album with the Basie Band, Big Boss Band. Unlike most transcriptions on this website, this features Freddie Green in a small group context with the Kansas City 8. This album was recorded when Pep was 68 years old, hence representative of his mature style. What's immediately noticeable in Pep's small-group performance is that he feels no compulsion in this small-group context to fill in the space with full chords. Instead, he very much adheres to his typical one-note chord approach with rare (and tasteful) exceptions (e.g., bars 8, 21-22, 58). Also notable in this F blues, is that without exception, every time Freddie plays the IV chord (Bb7) he leans into the flat 7 (Ab) and stays there. Elsewhere throughout this excerpt he explores ways to give the blues some motion and lift (e.g., in bar 46, he plays G, A, Bb, Bb over a C7 chord). Throughout the entire album, Freddie is clearly audible and in fine form as a master of the rhythm guitar. Transcribed by David Williams |
